As we head into a new year and we see so many posts about creating a ‘new you,’ setting goals, resolutions and so on, it can feel overwhelming to say the least. I find a gentler approach works for me. Firstly, not taking too much notice of what others are doing and going at my own pace. We can definitely feel a bit of FOMO at this time of year, I certainly can do. And yes, the start of a brand new year can be exciting, feelings of anticipation, wonder about what the year will bring are all beautifully positive. But when we set rigid goals that we beat ourselves up over if we don’t achieve... that’s when the positive turns negative, the beauty can turn ugly.
For example, I haven't blogged since last June! I absolutely love writing but other things took over and before I knew it, it was December and I hadn't written a blog post. So one of my intentions for this year is to blog more regularly. Now, I could set a resolution to blog 3 times a month, as that's how much I'd like to. But I know that if I set it as a firm resolution, and then life and work gets incredibly busy, I may not achieve that. In the past, when I have set myself rigid 'I must or else' goals, I've felt hugely disappointed in myself, like I'd let myself down in some way, and let others down in the process! But that's just not possible, because I am the one that has set the goal in the first place. So by all means set some intentions, dream big, let the mind wander, (I love doing this, allowing thought to flood in with no limits), think about what you’d love to have happen this year and beyond... but don’t pin everything on it. Be kind to your self and allow life to unfold too. The most amazing things can happen when we don’t set rigid goals. I love to set a direction at this time of year and set some intentions... and of course take some action (nothing is going to fall in my lap without action!) ... but allow the universal energy, the force or whatever your word for it is, in too. That’s when the magic really happens. Wishing you all a positive, healthy and above all happy 2019 and beyond! Vee x
