How to Boost Your Metabolism and Help Your Body Detox with One Simple Trick

This simple tip can help your body’s natural detox process, aid your digestion, improve your skin, and boost your metabolism and energy levels!

Our bodies are bombarded with toxins all day long… from the environment, from chemicals in our shampoos and body lotions, from the food we eat, from the air we breathe… Don’t get me wrong, the body does an amazing job of getting rid of these toxins to help us to stay healthy. After all, that’s all our body wants to do, keep us in optimum health. ​
​The main detoxifying organ, as you probably already know, is the liver. This little power house organ is one of the busiest in the body, not just processing toxins but carrying out a whole host of other important daily tasks, so anything we can do to help this little guy do its job properly has got to be beneficial.
I’ve got one trick that I use daily, every morning after I wake up, before I eat or drink a thing. This one trick helps my digestive system, aids my liver and stimulates my metabolism. That one little trick?
I drink Lemon Water!
Is that it, you ask? Yep, that’s it. Here’s the process, and it takes less than a minute (so no excuses that you don’t have time in the morning…

The Ritual

As soon as I come down stairs, I squeeze ½ a large (preferably organic) lemon into a small glass of room temperature filtered water (room temperature is preferable because it is easier for the body to deal with). And I drink it. And then I wait around 10 to 15 minutes before I eat or drink anything else.
That’s it! That’s the secret, it’s that simple and I really urge you to try it. 

The Benefits

​So, why is this morning ritual so damn good for us? There’s a whole long list of things that lemons are said to be good for.  I’ve picked out my top three:
  1. Lemons are alkalising - Well firstly lemons are known for their antibacterial, antimicrobial and immune boosting properties, as well as their liver cleansing components. Add to this the fact that lemons are alkalising to the body (despite their acidic state) and that most people’s diets are too acidic, lemons help the body to move towards the slightly alkaline state that it needs to be for homeostasis.
  2. Lemons are great for the immune system – Packed with vitamin C (187% of the RDA per serving), alongside numerous anti-oxidants, they pack a powerful free-radical fighting punch.
  3. The citric acid in lemons aids digestion and prompts the liver to produce more bile (needed to break down fats).
Lemon water in the mornings is something I recommend to clients for all of the reasons discussed, and always as part of a body reset or detox programme. To find out why a body reset can be so powerful (and simple) to do, read my blog post here.
