Mineral Testing & HTMA – Frequently Asked Questions

What is hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA)?

Hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA) is a laboratory test that measures mineral levels and ratios in body tissues using a small hair sample. Unlike blood tests, which reflect short-term circulating levels, HTMA provides insight into longer-term mineral patterns and how your body has been adapting over several months. It is commonly used to assess stress response, metabolic efficiency, and mineral balance, and can help identify underlying imbalances that may be contributing to symptoms such as fatigue, low mood, brain fog, anxiety, and changes in skin or hair.

Why use hair instead of blood testing?

Blood is tightly regulated to keep you alive, so results can look “normal” even when symptoms are not. Hair analysis reflects mineral patterns stored in tissues over time, giving a broader picture of stress adaptation, metabolic patterns, and longer-term imbalances. It does not replace blood testing, but it often explains what blood tests cannot.

How can mineral imbalances affect menopause symptoms?

Minerals play a central role in energy production, nervous system stability, thyroid function, blood sugar regulation, and stress resilience. They are often described as the “spark plugs” of the body because they enable countless biochemical processes to function efficiently. During late perimenopause and postmenopause, long-standing mineral imbalances can contribute to fatigue, anxiety, low mood, poor sleep, stubborn weight gain, and reduced tolerance to stress. Hormones matter, but they do not act in isolation.

Who is HTMA most suitable for?

HTMA is particularly useful for women in perimenopause or postmenopause who have persistent symptoms despite “normal” blood tests. It is often helpful when fatigue, mood changes, weight resistance, or poor resilience have not responded to standard advice, supplements, or medication alone. It can also be appropriate for anyone of any age or gender experiencing ongoing or chronic symptoms where routine testing has failed to provide clear answers.

Is HTMA evidence-based?

Hair mineral analysis has been used in clinical and research settings for decades. As with any functional test, its value depends on laboratory standards and correct interpretation. The quality of interpretation matters. I have advanced training in HTMA and have interpreted hundreds of test results, as well as supporting practitioner education in this field. When used appropriately and in context, HTMA can provide meaningful insights into mineral patterns and physiological stress.

What does your mineral test package include?

The mineral test package includes the laboratory analysis, professional interpretation, and a 1-to-1 Zoom consultation. It serves as a starting point, giving clarity on underlying mineral patterns before deciding whether further structured support, such as The Mineral Balance Formula, is appropriate.

How long does the process take?

Once your hair sample reaches the laboratory, results typically take two to three weeks. After your results are available, we schedule a consultation to review your mineral patterns and discuss what they may suggest in relation to your symptoms. The process is structured and supportive.

Can I do this outside the UK?

Yes. Although I am based in the UK, I work with clients internationally. Test kits can be arranged for clients in the UK, US, Canada, the UAE, and across Europe, and consultations are conducted via Zoom.

Is mineral testing only for menopause?

Not at all. HTMA can be used to assess mineral balance at different life stages and in a variety of health contexts. Although much of my clinical focus is on women in late perimenopause and postmenopause, I’m always happy to discuss whether this approach is appropriate for you.

Will I need supplements?

Not necessarily, although targeted supplementation is often helpful and clinically appropriate. Recommendations depend entirely on your individual mineral patterns and overall picture. The goal is not to prescribe unnecessary supplements, but to create a structured and appropriate plan where support is genuinely needed. In some cases, dietary and lifestyle adjustments alone may be sufficient.

Can HTMA replace medical care or hormone therapy?

No. HTMA does not replace medical diagnosis or treatment. It is used as a complementary functional assessment to better understand underlying patterns that may be contributing to symptoms. Decisions about medication or hormone therapy should always be discussed with your GP or medical provider.

What makes your interpretation different?

Interpretation is everything. I am one of a small number of practitioners in the UK with advanced training in HTMA analysis and am actively involved in practitioner education in this field. This means results are reviewed in context rather than applied using rigid, one-size-fits-all protocols. The aim is careful interpretation and clinical reasoning, not generic supplementation or recommendations.
