Your Skin Care Products Could be Doing More Harm Than Good

Did you know your skin is the largest organ in your body? And your first line of defence?

Skin serves as a buffer that protects us from extreme temperatures and toxic chemicals, amongst other things, and produces antibacterial compounds that help protect against infections.

It’s really an incredible organ but a lot of us don’t look at it in the same way as our liver or heart. So I’m here to say that you really should as it plays a very important role in your health.

When you put something on your skin, within 20 to 30 seconds it is absorbed into your blood stream. Many people don’t realise that! When you put something on your skin, you are actually taking it internally too.

So, the lipstick, the body wash, the shampoo, the body lotion, the nail polish, the perfume… all these things matter.

It’s estimated that the average woman puts on 168 chemicals on their body every day!

Think about it… you wake up you brush your teeth, you shower with gel or soap, you might wash your hair, you moisturise your body, you put on deodorant, you put cream on your face, you might apply sun screen, then foundation, blusher, eye makeup, perhaps hair spray, perfume…

And that’s just the morning…

It’s so important to know what we are actually putting on our body. Just because you aren’t aware of it, doesn’t mean it isn’t causing a problem for your health.

So, what do you need to be looking out for?

You need to be aware of things like parabens, phthalates, triclosan, SLS (sodium laurel sulphate) and aluminium. These have all been linked to many health issues such as hormone imbalance (endocrine disruptors), toxicity in the liver, reproductive issues, and even cancers! Yes, cancers…

You might be wondering how the government would allow for these dangerous chemicals to be in our products… that’s another post for another day… but you do need to know that they are there in many of the products that you may be using, unless you have consciously chosen not to.

Am I scaremongering? I don’t believe so! I am hugely passionate about this topic, and have seen that with my clients, when they start to remove these products from their lives, alongside changing their nutrition, looking after themselves, and dealing with stress and sleep, big changes start to occur.

So, what can you do?

  • Firstly, make a conscious decision to look at what’s in your personal care and cleaning products.
  • Download the Think Dirty App and scan your products to see what’s in them, and how toxic they are. Or check the EWG website.
  • Replace your products with non-toxic products. Choose carefully, research the company. It will be no surprise to those who know me that I use doTERRA products and I love them.
  • Investigate making your own personal care and cleaning products. I teach people how to do this using pure essential oils and natural bases. Message me if this interests you and you’d like to join one of my classes.
